The key to having people find you on the internet is through SEO. This stands for Search Engine Optimization. If you have a website, or a blogger, or upload videos on YouTube. You need to learn and understand how SEO works.
You and I are going to learn about SEO and how it relates to YouTube. YouTube is a search engine just like Google. In fact, YouTube is the second biggest search engine, with Google being number one. This is why I love the YouTube platform so much. People search on YouTube just like they do on Google.
So lets you and I get started. I’m telling you right now I’m dropping the goods. This is going to be a great start to understanding SEO and YouTube. Get ready to start taking some notes.
YouTube SEO Tutorial – Keyword Research
Before you even create your video. You need to do keyword research. Keywords are the phrases that people are typing into the YouTube search box. When you upload a video on YouTube there’s a place where you can put these keywords for your video. YouTube refers to them as tags.
When you’re doing your keyword research make sure the keywords match the topic of your video. If your video is on a Paleo Diet. make sure all the keywords that you use for your video refer to this type of diet. This is a very important step that most people miss. The keywords that you choose have to match your video topic.
To do your keyword research on YouTube. Go to the search bar at the top on YouTube and start typing in words for your video. You will see choices drop down below your search as you type. These are the phrases that people are searching for on YouTube. YouTube is telling you right away what phrases people are typing in.
These are the exact phrases you want to use for your keywords. If you use these phrases for your keywords chances are very good that people will find your video.
When you are adding your keywords for your video don’t make them up. These may be phrases people are not typing in during their search. If you do this, chances are really good that nobody’s going to ever find your video.
When you use the right keywords for your video tags. YouTube will pick up on this and add your video to the search results when someone types in your keywords.
YouTube SEO Tutorial – TubeBuddy
A tool that I use to assist me with my keyword research is called to TubeBuddy. This is a Chrome extension that you can install for free. I use the PRO account for its additional features.
Start with the TubeBuddy free account. This will give you enough time to really check it out. I know it will absolutely help you with your keyword research.
With TubeBuddy I’m able to see the video tags for each video. Not just my videos but the tags on other people’s videos too. TubeBuddy shows me where those keywords rank on YouTube. This is one of the features that I end up using a lot. TubeBuddy allows me to select keywords their ranking high. The lower the ranking number the better.
When you find a high-ranking video similar to yours. TubeBuddy allows you to copy the video tags and paste them into your video. This is a powerful feature. This tells YouTube that your video is similar to the high-ranking video.
When you do it’s going to give your video a much better chance of showing up in the What’s Next video list.
YouTube SEO Tutorial – Sort By Most Popular Videos
You need to know what content to do a video on. The way you want to do this is by looking at what is already working in your niche. Find at least 10 to 20 other YouTubers in your niche. Make sure they are successful YouTubers. Don’t find others that are just starting out. This is where you are going to get your video content.
You need to know which one of their videos are getting the best results. The easiest way to do this is right from YouTube. Go to the person’s YouTube channel. Click on the videos tab. Go over on the right, click on Sort By and select the most popular. The videos will be sorted from most popular to least popular. Start watching the most popular videos to get your content ideas. You need to do this for at least 10 to 20 of your competitors
Now with that being said.
DON’T COPY THEIR VIDEOS.
You want to use their videos for inspiration to get ideas. Take their content and put your own spin on it. Make your videos your own. You are only going to their videos to see which ones are working for content ideas.
You don’t want to reinvent the wheel. Find what is working and use that for your content.
Remember as you’re watching their videos to check out their tags by using TubeBuddy.
YouTube SEO Tutorial – More On Keywords
Another tool that I use for keyword research is called Ubersuggest. This free tool is from Neil Patel. Neil is the king when it comes to SEO. as well as using this tool for keyword research it’s also great for checking out websites. More importantly your competitor’s websites. But, I want to stay on track and just talk about keyword research.
This is a free tool and I am still astounded by that fact. I’m going to bet you any money that Neil is going to decide to start charging for the use of this tool. I would take advantage of this free tool because it is kick-ass.
To use this tool. Enter your broad keyword in the search box. Then on the left side, this page will show the data for different keywords. The first column shows the volume of searches per month. You want to focus on keywords that have high search volume. The next column you want to look at is the last column. This column is SEO difficulty (SD). You want to use keywords that have a low number in this column.
Searching for the keywords you want to use. The volume number has to be high and the SEO difficulty number should be a low number.
You can still do your keyword research with Google Keyword Planner. This is another free tool. The only caveat is you have to set up some Google ads to get to the Keyword Planner. I just wanted to show you an awesome free tool that everyone can use.
Hey, I get it. You don’t feel like reading the article. Check out the video were you and I will go through each detail.
YouTube SEO Tutorial – Video Structure
I want to talk about when you actually get ready to do your video. Maybe some of this is obvious but I need to say it anyway. Your videos have to provide content to your viewers. They actually have to help people out.
At the beginning of my video, I do my introduction and tell the viewer what the video is going to be about. During the video, you want to get engagement from your viewer. Remind them to like comment and subscribe to your YouTube channel. You want your viewer to engage with your video because this helps with its ranking on YouTube. The more likes comments and shares that you get with help your video moves up in rankings.
YouTube SEO Tutorial – Click Through Rate (CTR)
Click through rate Is how many views you got based on the number of impressions. So let’s just take this one step at a time.
Impressions are the number of times that YouTube displayed your video on a page. The Click Through Rate is when someone clicked on the video image to watch your video.
You can find all this data under analytics on YouTube. The way you get to analytics is as follows. Go to YouTube Studio by clicking on the blue button near the top right of your Channel. Then from the menu on the left click on Analytics. On the Channel Analytics page click on the Reach tab. On this page, there are Impressions and how they led to Watch Time section. You’re going to see a number that shows your monthly impressions. The number below that is your click-through rate. You will see a click-through rate percentage also.
Another number that is very, very important with YouTube is Watch Time. That is the number at the bottom. Watch Time is how long people spend watching your videos. The higher this number is the much better it is for your YouTube channel. One way to increase your watch time is by providing content throughout your video and keep that viewer engaged.
Youtube SEO Tutorial – On-Page And Off-Page SEO
This simply means that your keywords are going to be used on the YouTube platform.
Let’s go over on-page SEO first. YouTube searches your video titles and descriptions to try and find keywords that people have typed in during their search. What this means is you want to have at least one of your keywords in the title. When you write the description for your video you want to use your keywords throughout the video description.
I would also include the video thumbnail part of the on-page SEO. The video thumbnail will have a title and the use of eye-catching colors to grab someone’s attention. The job of the thumbnail is to get someone’s attention to make them want to click on the thumbnail. This will bring them right to your video.
You may not use off-page SEO much if at all. This is when your video is embedded on a web page. You could also have links on a webpage or social media post that bring them to your video. This is a way for someone to get to your video from outside of the YouTube platform.
Youtube SEO Tutorial – It All Starts With A Simple Search
Keywords along with SEO are the reasons why people have a chance to watch your video. The idea here is don’t reinvent the wheel. Follow what the leaders in your niche are doing. Watch their content by looking at their most popular videos. put your own spin on that same content.
Doing keyword research with YouTube and Ubersuggest. Your keyword research should be done first. This is step one when creating a video. When I’m doing keyword research I copy them into Notepad. This is a perfect spot to save them. So when the time comes during the upload of my video I copy him from notepad and paste them directly into YouTube. make sure you have the keywords separated with commas.
When doing your video remind yourself of the video structure. You want to introduce yourself at the beginning and let the viewers know what the videos about. Then ask them to subscribe, like, and comment. This engagement is very important on YouTube in helping your video to rank.
